Dionysus – the god of wine in Greek mythology, one of the twelve gods of Olympus. Dionysus was the god who taught humans how to grow and make Greek wine.
The History of Greek Wine: From Antiquity to the Present
Greek wine is much more than just Retsina. As early as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey in the 8th century BC, history testifies to the widespread production of wine in Greece. Wine is also deeply rooted in Greek mythology; Dionysus, the god of wine, appears in various parts of Greece and taught people how to grow and make wine.
Greece is one of the world’s oldest wine producers, with a wine history that goes back more than 6,000 years. Back then, the Greeks produced wine for their own household needs, a tradition that is still alive and well today. There are a multitude of different Greek wine grapes, and for red wine, Agiorgitiko, Kotsifali, Liatiko, Romeiko, and Xinomavro are used, among others.
Retsina: The National Wine of Greece
One of the most famous Greek white wines is Retsina, which many consider to be the national wine of Greece. The name Retsina comes from “retsi,” which means resin. The ancient Greeks added resin because of its special preservative properties. Although local Retsina wines are produced all over Greece, the most popular and often recognized are those from Macedonia in Northern Greece – including Malamatina, Kechribari, and Georgiadis from Thessaloniki.
Greek Wines: An Underrated Quality
Greece produces some of the world’s best wines and has won gold awards for both white and red wines on several occasions. However, it is a shame that many people still do not know about these excellent wines. This may be due to ignorance, that some quality wines are not available abroad, or that people simply have not had the opportunity to taste them.
Fortunately, Greek wines are more in demand and popular today than ever. That’s why a larger selection has also been introduced to the market here at home, so more people can experience how good Greek wines really are.
