The best Greek wines
Greece and its wine
Greece is one of the oldest wine producing countries in the world and the first wine producers in Europe, but over the years Greek wine has been overlooked. The earliest evidence of Greek wine has been dated 6,500 years ago, where wine was produced on a household or communal basis.
Many of the Greek wines go well with our Greek catering menu as well as our gyros in Copenhagen
Top-scoring Greek white wine
Kechris, Tear of the Pine, Retsina 2022
A very special and award-winning Greek white wine is the Retsina from Kechris. This retsina has a pale gold color with aromas that seem to be perfumed rather than dominated by resin; also note that this is an oaked wine, and you will find just as much soft oak and creamy berries on the nose. On the palate, all of these elements come together irresistibly as well. Another point to note is that the variety here is 100 percent Assyrtico. The result is a triumph. We recommend it to all open-minded readers. Alcohol 13.5%
Top-scoring Greek red wine
Parparoussis, Taos, Achaia, Peloponnese, Greece, 2012
This red wine is from a family-run winery founded in 1974 by Athanassios Parparoussis, who makes wine with his two daughters: Their vineyards include Assyrtiko, Athiri, Sideritis and Mavrodaphne, planted in various PGIs around the Peloponnese. This particular wine is made from 100% Mavrodaphne and aged in French Allier oak barrels for 24 months. The wine is very elegant and precise on the palate. A red wine of class and character. Laurel aromas on the nose, with a strong wild and botanical touch. Classic.
This wine has achieved 96 points in a wine test.
